Ingredients Needed
Here’s what you need to know about the ingredients in this recipe to make it successfully:
Air Fryer Chicken Skewers
- Chicken Thighs: I’m using raw, boneless, and skinless chicken thighs. I cut them into bite-sized pieces to help them cook evenly on the skewer sticks
- Steak Seasoning: I use this in place of sea salt since the combination of spices gives the meat layers and layers of flavor. Your favorite steak seasoning (like a Montreal steak seasoning) would work best for this recipe.
- BBQ Chicken Rub: This is a homemade brown sugar dry rub. It includes spices like garlic powder and smoked paprika.
- Avocado Oil: this is a neutral-tasting oil with a high smoke point. You can substitute this for something like olive oil if that’s what you have on hand.
Hot Honey Sauce
This is an optional add-on for this recipe. You can also make these air fryer chicken skewers with buffalo sauce or bbq sauce.
- Honey: Your favorite honey from the grocery store would work for this.
- Sriracha Sauce: I prefer this over something like hot sauce because it includes ingredients like garlic.
- Rice Vinegar: This is optional. I use it because it gives the sauce a bright, acidic taste.
Tools
- Metal Skewers: I link to the one that I use in the recipe card below. I prefer these because they are dishwasher-safe, reusable, and durable.
How To Make Air Fryer Chicken Skewers
- Season the chicken pieces: Add the chicken pieces, seasoning, dry rub, and the avocado oil to a large bowl. Use tongs to evenly coat the chicken.
- Lace the chicken pieces onto the skewers: Avoid stuffing them since it makes the chicken harder to cook. I use about 5-6 chicken bites per skewer.
- Air fry the chicken skewers: I preheat my air fryer before starting
- Add the skewers to the air fryer basket in a single layer.
- Air fry at 400 for 8 minutes
- Add the hot honey ingredients to a small bowl. Whisk to combine.
- Use a basting brush to coat both sides of the skewers with hot honey sauce
- Air fry at 400 for 5-6 more minutes to cook the chicken skewers through and char some of the edges.
Recipe Tips & FAQs
- Sauce near the end: this keeps the sauce from burning
- Preheat the air fryer: You want to get the cooking pot hot so that it will start to cook/sear the chicken skewers as soon as they are placed inside.
